A couple of weeks ago, I got an actual letter in the mail. You know, a letter, delivered by the mailman, in an envelope without a window in it, with my name and address handwritten and the return address had a name I did not recognize on a neat little sticker.
The letter-writer and I had lost track of each other about ten years ago. She had looked for me, found me on the internet. The letter she sent was newsy and lovely and of course, I said, Let’s have lunch! She suggested Penn’s Table in Lionville - it’s close to her work, and we would have more time to talk.
Of course, the minute I saw her we both burst into tears, which can’t be an every day occurrence at this happy restaurant.
There is a really nice atmosphere here, and a board with specials greets you at the vestibule. I have to remember to take a picture next time, because I always think that I am going to remember, but I never do. I do know that there was tomato soup up there because when I read it I decided that it was exactly what I needed on this cold day. Not just because it would take the chill off, but because the over-arching theme of the day was nostalgia, and nothing is more nostalgic for me than a steamy bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. And someone at Penn’s Table must have similar memories to me because the grilled cheese sandwich was on the board, too!
I was all set to order this pair and so was my friend when I had a momentary clutch - would I be satisfied with a grilled cheese? I asked our waitress if it was a BIG grilled cheese and bless her heart, she thought I was concerned about it being too large. After I explained nooooo, I was having a Heartiness Alert, we agreed I should order the ham and cheese club sandwich. My friend stayed with the grilled cheese. We were both happily satisfied.
The soup was excellent - tomato-ey, with herbs. I wish I had ordered a bowl. See the picture? It smelled so good, I dug right in and forgot to take the before picture.

Tomato Soup, Ham and Cheese Club
You can see the herbs! The club sandwich was great, with exactly those elements you want in a good club sandwich: crispy toast, good quality lunch meat and cheese, and a substantial presence of bacon, lettuce and tomato. My friend and I took turns eating and listening as we spilled the stories of the last ten years of our lives. We laughed, we cried, we chewed!
Penn’s Table delivered on the promise of a great lunch and a pleasant atmosphere. The waitress was kind and patient when we stayed a little longer than normal during a busy lunch time. Her service was excellent.
