Just Mom’s has been open in some form or another since I was a Girl Scout at Camp Indian Run. It has had lots of different owners, lots of different menus. One thing it has always been, is a place where the people in this very rural, very quiet neighborhood get a sense of community and an ice cream cone. The charm of Mom’s - as we have always called it - is that it’s NOT in a mall, it’s NOT a chain, it’s not corporate. Out here, where it’s eleven miles to a place where you can buy milk, where people move to not be in everybody’s business, it is an oasis where you can touch base, and now that Anthony is in charge, it’s the place where everyone knows your name.
You might have to wait a bit for your food, but while you are in line you can hear about lost dogs and zoning beefs and runaway horses and local (very local) politics. You see young couples and old couples and families with small children. There are Dads picking up pizza for Friday night dinners and sometimes people who are traveling this road for work, looking for a light in the darkness, where they can get a warm cup of coffee and a nice sandwich. Anthony and I have become fast friends the last couple of years.
If you want ice cream, go up to the windows on the outside and order. Sundaes, milkshakes, cones, dipped cones, every wonderful sweet concoction you can crave is just a few minutes away. You can order food there, too, and pick it up inside. I usually call ahead if I am going to pick up and go. Or you can order at the counter inside off the white board or the menu and eat at the tables. That’s your best choice for getting your “neighborhood” on. Anthony offers a huge assortment of sandwiches, wings, hoagies, steaks, salads, desserts. He also has sliced meats and cheeses and deli items like salads and what he has is always changing.
Tonight the choices are staggering, and as I wait for my dinner companion Cindy, I order a turkey rueben and an order of chili cheese fries. She shows up minutes later and orders a BLT hoagie. We get our drinks, and find a table. We say hello to some neighbors at another table and set about gossiping about noise issues in the ‘ship.
When Anthony himself HEFTS our order to our table, Cindy swears she can’t eat it all - indeed - there is a full rasher of bacon on her hoagie roll. Fresh tomatoes, cheese and lettuce round it out. She says she is going to take half of it home to her husband, who is working the late shift. About ten minutes later, there are only some sad shreds of lettuce in the bottom of her little red and white checked boat and my guess is that hubby is going hungry. A good choice to take home to him would be the pepperoni and pepper pizza. It’s great with either green peppers or the slightly sweeter red variety. Anthony suggested this - when he opens his produce stand next door in the spring, he says you will be able to order either. The produce stand is seasonal, has fresh vegetables and fruits, including locally grown stuff.
I eat all of my turkey rueben and it was tasty. I can only eat about half of the chili cheese fries and Cindy is stuffed, so I take them home and heat them up the next morning as an exciting side to my huevos rancheros.
Sadly, we did not get dessert. Not this time - but when you go, save some room and get a sundae or a cone. Here’s a challenge - see who at your table can tie the cherry stem in a knot with their tongue!
