Convertibles can change the way you perceive the countryside – help you discover new sensations you might miss in the air conditioned confines of your car. Like smells…
I was driving through Honey Brook last summer in my old mustang with a friend and we smelled something so heavenly, so NOT the usual farmy, summery smells of Chester County in July. No, this smelled more like South Carolina, along the back roads. It was BARBEQUE! Just like in those old cartoons, a smokey hand seduced us to the side of the road, just to the east side of town, into Something Grilled. That one meal made me a Huge Fan.
It’s a small take-out only establishment, very clean, decorated in a vaguely retro-country way. You order at a counter, there are take out soda, juices and lemonades in a fridge in the corner and sometimes, an array of home made cookies in a basket on the counter. Sal and Sandy, the owners and Chester County natives with familial Southern Influence, greet me every time I go in. I enjoy picking up lunch and dinner for my clients and out of town relatives there all year round now, so when I found myself up in Honey Brook showing houses last Saturday, I convinced my client that we should order lunch and take it back to her house.
It smells delicious inside and and we busy ourselves with choosing today’s meal from the menus on the counter. There is also a board with a variety of temptations: smoky whole chickens, wings and burgers, ribs, pulled pork and beef, plus sides and salads. My guest quickly settles on a smoked chicken wrap (6.75), and I order a whole smoked chicken (8.25) and an order of potato chumpies, (5.75) to go. While we are waiting for it to be wrapped to go, Sal treats us to a sampling of the wonderful smoked sweet potato casserole (order ahead for your barbeque and Thanksgiving) and the exceptionally fresh and tangy slaw. My companion liked the slaw best, which left all the sweet potato for me. The sweet potatoes are very rich, and last time that I had some left over, I mixed it into pancake batter and made sweet potato pancakes with maple syrup and pecans. THAT was really good.
We are in and out in a jiffy, moments later unwrapping our meals at my client’s dining table. It was a little like Christmas morning, because she can’t stop showing me how great her sandwich looks. She can’t stop telling me how GOOD it is, once she takes a bite. She unwraps it and shows me the chicken, cheese, tomato, and spring mix. Then she wraps it back up and I think she is trying to tell me that the wrap itself is crispy and grilled instead of soggy and icky, but her mouth is full and all that I can hear is “ymm! Ymmm!mmmm!slurp! Ymmm!
I set myself to eating a potato chumpie: mashed potatoes with cheese and peppers rolled in a ball about the size of a walnut, deep fried and served with a secret sauce. I love these – very satisfying crunch and a nice little bite back from the peppers. My companion says she doesn’t do spicy so – again, I win!
I love my whole smoked chicken, too. The skin is tasty and crispy, the flesh moist and flavorful with smoke and spices. It spoils me for eating chicken that is not smoked. I always order a whole one and make soup the next day with the picked over carcass. Quick recipe: boil all the meaty bits off in low sodium chicken broth, add 1 can Green Giant Mexican Corn, one can Rotelle tomatoes, and one can black beans. Pick the carcass out, return the meat to the soup. Warm bowls, and in each bowl, place a handful of corn chips, a tablespoon of salsa, a measure of shredded jack cheese, a dollop of sour cream and a dash of hot sauce. Spoon soup over and serve immediately. That will warm you up.
You won’t be disappointed in the ribs, pulled pork or any of the other great things that come out of the smoker. This is real, authentic barbeque - not something brushed with liquid smoke and put on a menu.
